JANINE BRÉGEON: A BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Janine Brégeon was born in France in the coastal area along the Atlantic. Her father was a landscape painter. As an adolescent she was a, not particularly enthusiastic, student of the Nantes Art School.
When she was 20, she started travelling; she first explored southern Algeria, and then went to Scandinavia, before setting off for her amazing adventure from France to India from 1952 to 1955, which she described in a book of drawings (Voyage en Inde, published in 1992).
On her return to France, she devoted the next 6 years, until 1961, to oil-paintings, which were inspired by the great French masters of the beginning of the 20th century. She also worked, during this period, on a series of drawings, in black and white, which reflect the anguish of the generation born after the war (Exorcismes, published in 1995).
In 1962 she moved to India, and settled in Puducherry after first living, for a while, in Chennai. This was a period of activity marked by the publication, in French, of novels, narratives, as well as the creation of, predominantly expressionist, line-drawings. Finally, from 2006 onwards, she found a new technique of colour drawings on handmade paper which permitted her to express a different way of seeing the world.
Evidently, she is now strongly influenced by the environment in which she lives. Her work reflects, though transposed, the colourful life of Southern India, the vibrant energy of the popular festivals, as well as the rigour and strictness of the classical dances of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Janine Brégeon est née en France sur la côte atlantique d’un père peintre paysagiste. Adolescente, elle est l’élève (peu enthousiaste) des Beaux-Arts de Nantes.
A 20 ans commence pour elle une période de voyages qui la mène dans le Sud de l’Algérie, puis en Scandinavie, avant la grande aventure de France en Inde de 1952 à 1955 qu’elle a décrite dans un livre de dessins (Voyage en Inde, publié en 1992).
Après son retour en France, de 1955 à 1961 elle peint à l’huile de larges tableaux (portraits, paysages), inspirés par les grands maîtres Français du début du XXe siècle. De cette période date aussi une série de dessins en noir et blanc qui reflètent les angoisses de la génération d’après guerre (Exorcismes, publié en 1995).
En 1962, elle s’installe en Inde à Madras, puis à Pondichéry. Phase marquée par la publication de romans, nouvelles et récits, et aussi par la réalisation de dessins au trait au caractère expressionniste. Enfin, à partir de 2006, elle trouve une nouvelle technique de dessins en couleur sur papier fait main qui lui permet d’exprimer une manière différente de voir le monde.
Manifestement, elle est désormais fortement influencée par le milieu dans lequel elle vit. Son œuvre reflète, quoique très transposée, la vie colorée du Sud de l’Inde, la bouillonnante animation des fêtes populaires, mais aussi la rigueur, la précision, des grandes danses classiques du pays Tamoul et du Kerala.
