Ce pillier de fer du IV° siècle, dédié à Vishnu, témoigne de la maîtrise des métaux des artisans de cette époque. The Qutb Minar, tour de cinq étages, fut érigé à l’emplacement du premier royaume musulman indien, fondé en 1193. Commencé par Qutb –ud- Din, il fut achevé par son successeur, lltutmish.

The white marble tomb of Salim Christi, a muslim prophet. Saried women move around carved pillars, and lattice screens filtered the light to stunning effect. Inside is a tomb inlaid with mother-of-pearl where a holy man is seated on cushions and visitors donate rupees.

Khas Mahal is a palace built in marble stone in the Agra fort. Built specially as a private palace by Shah Jahan in 1637 , it overlooks the Angoori Bagh (Grapes garden).

Srirangam is the abode of Vishnu. It is considered as the first and the most important of the 108 main Vishnu temples. Srirangam is the foremost of the eight self-manifested shrines of Vishnu.
Another albumen print (n° 2064) by Samuel Bourne in Minneapolis Institute of Art (USA).
Postcard by Samuel Bourne shows three of the carved horse pillars.

Srirangam est consacré au dieu Vishnou. Il est considéré comme le premier parmi les 108 temples dédiés à cette divinité et le plus important des huit lieux de pèlerinage dédiés à Vishou.
La photo représente trois pilliers de chevaux sculptés.

Described by a Persian historian in the XVIth century as the pearl of the neckless among the Indian forts, the Gwalior Fortress has 3 kms long et stands on the top of the sandstone hill of 100m high.

Décrite au XVI° siècle par un chroniqueur persan comme « la perle des colliers des châteaux de l’ Inde », la citadelle de Gwalior mesure près de 3 km de long, et occupe la crête d’une colline de grès et de basalte haute de 100 mètres.

Bourne & Shepherd formed a partnership under their own names in about 186_, and opened a second branch in Kolkata. Bourne returned to England in 1870. He had made around 2200 pictures. He was replaced as head photographer in 1872 by Colin Murray.

Bourne & Sheperd associent leurs noms dans les années 1860 et ouvrent leur seconde succurcale à Calcutta en 1870. Bourne rentre en Angleterre cette année-là. Il a pris environ 2200 clichés et est remplacé en 1872 par Collin Murray.

Designed by Robert Fellowes Chisholm and completed in 1879, the Senate House in Chennai pioneered the Indo-Saracenic age in India. The product of deliberate British imperial ideology, Indo-Saracenic architecture combined traditional, particulary Islamic, elements with those of the Gothic revival style favoured in Victorian Britain.

Dessiné par Robert Fellowes Chisholm et achevé en 1979, le bâtiment du Sénat de Madras fut le premier en Inde, construit dans le style Indo-Saracénique, style délibérément choisi par les Britanniques, qui allie les éléments traditionnels islamiques avec le renouveau gothique particulièrement à la mode dans l’Angleterre victorienne.

The Golconda Fortress has been the Fort of the Qutub Shahi, dynasty who ruled Hyderabad from the XVIth to the XVIIth centuries. Queen Hayat Baksh was the wife of Muhammad Quli Shah.

Samuel Bourned arrived in Calcutta early in 1863. Moonshee Bagh commissionners boat is one of the first photographs made by Bourne in India, probably near Simla.

The British devised grand Assemblages in 1903 and 1911. It consisted of procession of troops, horses, camels and elephants bearing the 63 rulling princes in India to pay homage to the British Monarch. The same double elephant carriage was photographed by several lensmen including Dayal and Herzog and Higgins. Image by Herzog, dated 7 january 1903, is reproduced in India through the Lens, by Vidya Dehejia, p. 254 ; the one in The Unforgettable Maharajas is dated 1911 (p. 261).

Les grandes manoeuvres britanniques en 1903 et 1911 qui consistaient en processions de troupes, chevaux, chameaux et éléphants durant lesquelles les 63 dirigeants de l’Inde rendaient hommage au monarque anglais. Le double attelage d’éléphants fut de nombreuses fois photographié entre autre par Dayal, Herzog et Higgings. Le cliché d’Herzog de janvier 1903 est reproduit dans India through the Lens de Vidya Dehejia, p. 254 ; celle reproduite dans Unforgettable Maharajas p.261 est datée de 1911.

Shivashankar Narayan, a photographer based in Bombay who also taugh at the Bombay school of Art, undertook a commission to photograph the temple at Ambarnath in 1868-69.
